We compare each method from the following perspectives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Tagging Experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Making Changes to the Hierarchy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Metadata Navigation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Search Experience<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Method A \u2013 Create the entire hierarchy from a single termset in a single metadata column. The single column then can be used for tagging in a Document Library.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1724\" alt=\"metadatatax01\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax01.png\" width=\"249\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Method B \u2013 Create the metadata using separate metadata columns. Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Method A \u2013 Adding data in this scenario is straight forward and very structured.\u00a0 You work your way through the hierarchy and choose the tag to mark the data when adding data, because the hierarchy is split up across multiple columns and there is no relation between the columns.<\/p>\n<p><a to reflect this change without having to change any of the existing data.\u00a0 For example, moving Toronto to the Central Division.<\/p>\n<p><a Navigation<\/h2>\n<p>As you probably know, metadata navigation was a big feature added to SharePoint lists and libraries in SharePoint 2010 . In SharePoint 2013, Microsoft took this to a whole new level, but that&#8217;s beyond the scope of this blog post.. For Lists in SharePoint two types of metadata navigation can be added: Navigation Hierarchies and Key Filters.<\/p>\n<p>Method A \u2013 Navigation Hierarchies work very well in this case.\u00a0 The navigation is easy to follow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1711\" alt=\"metadatatax10\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax10.png\" width=\"209\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Key Filters also work with method A, but get a little messy if you try to use too many terms.\u00a0 The example below show a mix of divisions and teams.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1712\" alt=\"metadatatax11\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax11.png\" width=\"530\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax11.png 530w, https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax11-285x300.png 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Method B \u2013 Navigation hierarchies do not work very well in the case of method B. Using the following hypothetical situation, if there were a Dallas Mavericks team in both the Southeast and Southwest divisions, from the navigation hierarchy alone you would not be able to filter for the one specifically in the Southeast or Southwest.\u00a0 The only way to filter by the additional columns is to go to the divisions or conferences column and select the filter value, or use the Key Filters if they are turned on.\u00a0 This leads to using multiple interfaces to get to the data you want which can become confusing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.devhorizon.com\/reza\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/metadatatax12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1713\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Search Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Method A \u2013 When using Search with Method A, only the tag used as the metadata applies to the data.\u00a0 Take for example a search on David West.\u00a0 Searching for Indiana Pacers will find David West; however, searching for Central or East will not find this item.<\/p>\n<p><a everything, when using a single column with a complete hierarchy, data entry and metadata hierarchy management are easy to do.\u00a0 Metadata navigation is also more intuitive to use.\u00a0 However, when it comes to the search less information is available to find your data. In another word, search experience isn&#8217;t that great!<\/p>\n<p>And for multiple columns, the opposite is true.\u00a0 Data entry and hierarchy changes require more time to complete (and it&#8217;s easy to make mistakes).
